weekend awesomeness

we took advantage of nicolas' return to good health and a beautiful october weekend here in new orleans by enjoying just a couple of the dozens of amazing things going on. friday night mary and i joined our friends Jason and Sharon at a Blues Traveler show outside at Harrah's: while their kids stayed with nicolas and a babysitter at our house. we've been able to spend more time together since we're here in new orleans, and a few days earlier we had dinner at their house and nicolas played with jake and harley:
yesterday, we hopped down the street to the 2nd Annual Congo Square Festival. It was on Bayou St. John since Armstrong Park (the original location for Congo Square) is under renovation. It was a gorgeous day and nicolas had so much fun enjoying the great food:

and entertaining us with some new dance moves when the brass bands started up:
Then, today we headed over to Audubon Park to catch the Steam Train Festival. There was a real steam engine and rail cars and even a little red caboose. They also had a little Thomas the Tank Engine that we rode, which nicolas really loved:
he toured the railcars with mary:

and rang the bell from the steam engine:
there was also an artist at the festival who was asking people to sign one of his projects - old cypress doors that had been salvaged from damaged homes during katrina. each door had one of his paintings on it, then signatures from hundreds of new orleanians, so mary helped nicolas add his name:

then he and mary split a catfish po-boy and a delicious nectar cream snoball before we headed back home for naptime:

when he woke up from his nap around 4:30 we headed back to down to the bayou for the second day of Congo Square Fest to catch new orleans' own ambassador and trumpeter, singer extraordinaire Kermit Ruffins. Nicolas was in awe: (thanks Grace, for taking this pic!).
we ended the evening there with more great food, and nicolas was blown away by trombone-fronted jazz/rock superstars, Big Sam's Funky Nation. He couldn't stop dancing:

even when he was on our shoulders:

Thanks new orleans for such an amazing weekend!
