beautiful weekend

Last weekend we took advantage of a beautiful saturday to enjoy the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in Palmer Park near Carrollton and Claiborne. Nicolas was fascinated by the cellos, trombones and timpani drums and wanted to get as close to the stage as possible.

Here he is checking out everything before he and i went up to the front of the stage (don't let the frowny guy behind us get you down):
and enjoying a cracker to some lovely live classical music:

This weekend, the weather here in New Orleans was even more beautiful, and we took full advantage of it. Mary's mom was in town and we all spent some of the morning on nearby Bayou St. John, just a couple houses down the street from our old home here, We watched hundreds of people pass by as part of a Breast Cancer Awareness Race for the Cure event. There were dozens of folks in canoes and kayaks paddling up and down the bayou as part of the race as well. Nicolas got really excited about that and asked us if we could get a boat. As in, right then and there he wanted us to get one. We told him maybe some day. And for some strange reason he seemed okay with that.

Then we threw some acorns in the bayou and relaxed on a blanket near the water:.

At 11, we headed over a few blocks to City Park, and Mary dropped me and Nicolas off to play at the Amusement Park and Storyland. We rode the carousel twice:

he squealed when, on our second ride, his horse went up and down. "My horse is jumping daddy," he said.

then he rode the motorcycles:(I was happy to see he hung on so well).

And he also flew in the airplanes by himself: which seemed to excite and scare him a bit at the same time.

Mary and her mom met us a little bit later in Storyland. Nicolas and I had been going down this huge dragon slide over and over again (which seemed to excite and scare BOTH of us). We played on the fire engine and on the Jack and Jill slide (short, but terrifyingly steep) and then we met the Storyland Fairy Godmother:

Nicolas was completely fascinated by her. After she painted his arm he walked away, then circled back to a park bench 30 feet away, sat down, and watched her closely, all the while saying under his breath, "that's the fairy godmother. the fairy godmother". she spotted us and came over holding a small red velvet box and asked nicolas to look inside. i wish i had pictures but i was laughing too hard and just got caught up in the moment. he lifted the lid and saw 3 little finger puppet mice inside that looked real. she had him scratch their heads and every time he did, they'd jump back down in the box. he loved it. and asked if he could hold the box. no such luck, but he did get to pet the mice a little more and every time they jumped back in the box to hide he squealed and giggled.
we headed home after that for a long nap. and then ended the day with a visit to mary's mom's parents-in-law. i stayed home and cooked dinner but nicolas seemed to really enjoy his visit there. when he and mary got back home, he let me know there were 2 vacuums at mimi and popppy's house - and one had a red hose. for nicolas, i can't imagine a better ending to a great weekend.
