Happy Holidays

we had an awesome Christmas at my parents' house. nicolas had a great time. here's a four and a half minute phone call between my mom and him. she's pretending to be Mr. Fox and he's pretending to be Henry, a red-striped rabbit that Mr. Fox wants to put pepper on and eat. this is based on a book by Ellen Christelow called Henry and the Red Stripes

we're smiling on the inside!

pre-christmas cookie-making

sorry we've been away ... moving from nashville to new orleans more permanently, and doing lots of other stuff. we're in oxford for christmas and took some time post-nap today to bake some gingerbread cookies:

Mary enrolled Nicolas in a gymnastics class at the Y here in Nashville. Last Saturday was their first class. she said he loved it, and was a natural on the parallel bars.

happy belated thanksgiving

Image
wow, sorry for the delay in posting. lots going on with us trying to settle our living arrangements, and i just haven't had time to update this. if any one is still reading at this point, here goes: we had a great thanksgiving at my brother's house in nashville. nicolas spent most of the day in the basement/studio playing guitar, drums, bass and piano. my brother and a few of his musician friends joined us from time to time to give nicolas some pointers and kick out the jams. nicolas even made up his own song and sang it through my brother's microphone and voice modulator rig. everyone was pretty amazed at his ability to listen and keep time and play along with them at just 2 1/2. seriously. he was really doing great. i'm sorry i didn't bring the video camera. i did take some pics, but i have got to get a better one-touch. our little canon SureShot broke a while back, and this iPhone cam just doesn't cut it in low light. but hopefully you'll get the gist of

packing for grandma's

we shot this as nicolas packed his suitcase for his trip to oxford last week:

lamb tickets

A couple days before Nicolas went to visit his grandparents we drove over to the bayou to ride some beautiful Prospect.1 musical paddleboats. (Prospect.1 is the largest exhibition of contemporary art ever displayed in the United States, and it's all over New Orleans until Jan 18, 2009. 81 artists from around the world, over 20 different venues - amazing, beautiful works of art. And it's all free. See http://prospectneworleans.org for more info) Anyway, the paddleboats were closing down for the day, so we decided to just go to city park instead. Mary and I were talking about the tickets we'd need for the amusement park, and Nicolas let us know he had a few tickets already.

missing our little guy

he's having fun with the grandparents, and we're getting lots of work done, but we're missing him. here's some pics we took last week:

back on the antibiotics!

mary and nicolas saw the doctor again today, and our cheery, chipper little monkey apparently has a really bad, double ear infection. the doctor was surprised at how happy and upbeat he seemed. so we're back on the antibiotics. he's off to grandma's this weekend for the rest of the month so hopefully we can stem this rash of bad bacteria and infections a little more naturally for a while.

update

sometime late last night nicolas started feeling better. I guess all the pressure in his ears released because he couldn't stop telling me and Mary how his ear didn't hurt anymore. He was so happy that he must have forgotten how late it was. He wanted to play and talk and stay up with us. We finally got him to calm down by letting him sleep in our bed. I slept on the couch so my coughing wouldn't wake him up. He got up around 5 am with Mary. The she put him back down for a bit. I took care of him when he woke back up around 7 - he was so tired he just fell back asleep in my arms. The bottom line is he seems to be doing a lot better than he was last nite which is a huge relief for all of us. We'll watch him close today and plan on a dr visit Mon or tues

shoot. i spoke too soon. nicolas started complaining about his ear hurting tonight before bedtime. we gave him some tylenol, but he woke up about an hour later crying and in obvious pain. his cold was all but gone, but i think we have another ear infection now. we may take him to a clinic tomorrow if he's still hurting. we're open to any advice on reducing ear infections in toddlers if you'd like to share. thanks!

Hey everybody, sorry for the lack of communication here. i caught nicolas' cold and have been out of commission for the past several days. the good news is, he's back to his old chipper self - a little congested but practically all better, and fortunately for us, happy to help out with a little housework:

halloween interrupted

Image
nicolas had a fun halloween party at school today, but the poor little guy is fighting off another cold, so by the time he got home he was not up for getting in costume or going trick or treating. he and i stayed home and threw a birthday party for lammie instead, which was kind of fun too. later in the evening i talked him into letting me carry him down the street so he could see some scary houses. he liked that (he liked me wrapping him up in my cape while i held him - mary and i dressed up a little, even though he didn't). he got to experience a tiny bit of halloween, but not like we thought. next year he'll probably get the hang of it and be adamant about going out, regardless of how he's feeling or what the weather may be like. he's been trying to sleep tonight, but every hour or so mary's having to go in and comfort him. he's all congested, coughing and fever-y, crying and obviously miserable. man it sucks to be sick. i really feel for him. fortunately, he

nicolas tried out his costume with his friend harley at her brother jake's birthday party last saturday. he's looking forward to wearing it tomorrow night too.

rock climbing

Image
we took advantage of an empty playground at city park (voodoo fest kept all the car traffic out, so we just walked over - and had the whole place to ourselves). nicolas and i spent an hour there the day before also all by ourselves (the rain kept everyone away yesterday). i convinced him to climb the rock wall. he was scared at first - he told me "i'm going to fall daddy", like i was crazy for suggesting it. but i assured him he wouldn't. and once he got going, he didn't want to stop. we must have climbed that thing a hundred times yesterday. mary came with us today so she could see (and take pics).

beautiful weekend

Image
Last weekend we took advantage of a beautiful saturday to enjoy the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in Palmer Park near Carrollton and Claiborne. Nicolas was fascinated by the cellos, trombones and timpani drums and wanted to get as close to the stage as possible. Here he is checking out everything before he and i went up to the front of the stage (don't let the frowny guy behind us get you down): and enjoying a cracker to some lovely live classical music: This weekend, the weather here in New Orleans was even more beautiful, and we took full advantage of it. Mary's mom was in town and we all spent some of the morning on nearby Bayou St. John, just a couple houses down the street from our old home here, We watched hundreds of people pass by as part of a Breast Cancer Awareness Race for the Cure event. There were dozens of folks in canoes and kayaks paddling up and down the bayou as part of the race as well. Nicolas got really excited about that and asked us if we could get a b

Can you hear me now?

Image
Nicolas had his hearing checked on his Tuesday follow-up visit to the pediatrician. The doctor confirmed all the fluid was gone, but one of the tests came back questionable. So today Mary took him to a specialist today to conduct a more in-depth hearing test. Mary said he was great the whole time - very patient and well-mannered. And after the new test the specialist confirmed that Nicolas' hearing is completely fine. yay! The bad news is he still has some pressure on his eardrum, so something's going on in there. The specialist is recommending tubes because he thinks Nicolas will continue to have issues with fluid in his ears and subsequent infections, and he thinks it's being caused in part by allergies. He's also suggesting we give Nicolas Zyrtec or Claritin an hour before bedtime for now to help alleviate some of the discomfort. Despite all this, Nicolas was in high spirits today, which is great considering when I picked him up from school yesterday he seemed kind o

weekend awesomeness

Image
we took advantage of nicolas' return to good health and a beautiful october weekend here in new orleans by enjoying just a couple of the dozens of amazing things going on. friday night mary and i joined our friends Jason and Sharon at a Blues Traveler show outside at Harrah's: while their kids stayed with nicolas and a babysitter at our house. we've been able to spend more time together since we're here in new orleans, and a few days earlier we had dinner at their house and nicolas played with jake and harley: yesterday, we hopped down the street to the 2nd Annual Congo Square Festival. It was on Bayou St. John since Armstrong Park (the original location for Congo Square) is under renovation. It was a gorgeous day and nicolas had so much fun enjoying the great food: and entertaining us with some new dance moves when the brass bands started up: Then, today we headed over to Audubon Park to catch the Steam Train Festival. There was a real steam engine and rail cars and ev
