Festival update

Okay, so we're smack dab in the middle of the second weekend of Jazzfest, but I'm not sure we're going to go - we got our fill last weekend, and despite the gorgeous weather, we may save some money and enjoy some of the simpler things New Orleans has to offer. For those of you who didn't see the Flickr page or my Facebook page - here's some fun stuff from the past couple weekends:

1. French Quarter Festival - this event gets more amazing every year. the largest free music festival in the south - and one of the best, hands-down - packed over 400,000 people into the French Quarter over a beautiful Spring weekend for music, food, and fun.

We rode our bikes from our house down Esplanade Ave on Sunday to the Old US Mint and caught some great performances by local Zydeco legend, Rockin' Dopsie:

and the incomparable Wild Magnolias - a Mardi Gras Indian Tribe famous for its recordings from the 70s of Handa Wanda and Smoke My Peace Pipe. Nicolas loves their music and has been listening religiously to some tracks from "They Call Us Wild" for the past couple months. So imagine his excitement when he actually got to see the Wild Magnolias perform live - up close at French Quarter Festival.

we even ran into our good friends Jason and Jake and Harley:

But the real treat of the day was seeing the Big Chief Bo Dollis - the man behind the vocals on some of Nicolas' favorite songs, and one of the most famous Mardi Gras Indians. He's been very ill, and I believe he's currently on dialysis, so we were surprised to see him at the Festival, let alone on stage, but his performance was just incredible. heart warming and moving in every aspect. it was so good to see him up there. and i don't think there were a lot of dry eyes in the audience once he began singing.

afterward, on the way out of the fest, we spotted him resting by the gate. i'm not a celebrity stalker by any means, but i couldn't pass up the opportunity to thank him and let him know how much nicolas loved his music. he was so gracious and kind, and even let us take this:

nicolas was a little shy about the picture, but it's something i hope he'll treasure in the years to come.
