resilience

we've been "observing" nicolas' ear infection for the past several days, hoping it would clear up on its own, as most do. but today, his doctor told mary that the infection was now in both ears, and pretty bad. he pretty much insisted that antibiotics were our next best course of action. so, we've resigned ourselves (and nicolas) to them and will hope they can clear these ears up. i'm anti-antibiotics but i don't have a better option at this point, and more importantly i suppose, i don't have a medical degree. despite his obvious discomfort, nicolas has been a real trouper. mary stayed home with him all day monday instead of taking him to daycare and he took it pretty easy today after his doctor's appointment. i've been playing with him when i get home from work (he's really into his legos and cars these days), and tonight he wanted to go for a walk around the neighborhood after dinner. all things considered, he's been a wonderful littl

back in new orleans

we got back to new orleans recently. nicolas was back at school this week, now he's going 3 days a week. unfortunately, he's got another ear infection which just developed into a cold tonight. poor little guy can't sleep much and is calling us for water, tissues, and general comforting. hopefully it'll heal on its own in the next few days and he'll be back to his old silly self.

Nicolas has an obsession with ice cream trucks. at least once a week he asks to look at images of ice cream trucks online (while we listen to ice cream truck music). so, while we've been in Nashville we've been visiting Sevier Park almost every day after work hours. Earlier this week, while at the park, he heard the familiar ice cream truck song and spotted the bright yellow van rolling down the hill toward the park's parking lot: Once the van parked, he eyed it closely: And then he got concerned: He didn't want to go anywhere near it, and he watched cautiously as his mom went over to get something for him: He watched her very closely all the way across the parking lot, and then got excited as she started coming back toward us. Especially when she showed him this: Mmmmmm. BombPop! Thanks mom!

making the most of it

within a couple days of arriving here, we started giving our nashville home a little makeover. it's been on the market for a while, so we thought sprucing it up during our evacuation would be an excellent use of our time away from new orleans. fortunately, nicolas is old enough to actually help a little, and he insisted on handling a fair share of the mulching responsibilities. Good thing he had some gloves:
