home at last, sort of

less than a couple weeks ago we packed up the cats and nicolas and some essentials and headed down to new orleans to live for a while. we're renting my brother's and dad's house near city park so we can be closer to work, friends and the city we love.

within a few days of being here we had already run into some long lost friends. city park is literally a stone's throw away, and besides having a really fun playground for nicolas, it's also got the city's awesome museum of art, an amazing sculpture garden, an amusement park just for kids complete with a train and roller coaster, all set among groves of 100-year-old oak trees, bayous and wildlife.

here's nicolas enjoying the playground:

fortunately we got down here in time to enjoy what's left of the beautiful spring weather. the wednesday before jazzfest we met some good friends in the park for the Louisiana Philharmonic's annual pre-jazzfest concert, and unexpectedly ran into even more friends there. we've been walking down to the mid-city farmer's market every thursday for fresh seafood and produce, where we continue to see even more old friends, and to city park almost every other day, where today Mary was chatting with yet another old friend.

here's nicolas with our good buddy dave at the Farmer's Market. Dave is one of the smartest, sweetest guys i know - and a die-hard new orleanian. Dave is the kind of guy that makes you want to live here and even though Nicolas was a bit tired when we snapped this, i'm sure they will hit it off again real soon. (you may recall we visited dave with nicolas last year and nicolas played his piano and with his toy chicken).

we spent this past Friday and Sunday at Jazzfest with Nicolas and had a great time. we danced, ate, listened to some amazing music, played with all kinds of fun stuff at the Kids' Tent. Sunday was one of those perfect days - weather, people, energy - everything - and solidified our feelings that we belong in New Orleans, for better or worse, and at least for now.

we owe a huge thanks to my dad and brother for helping make this new orleans home a reality for us, and to my mom for doing such a great job with nicolas while we got settled.

videos from jazzfest and new orleans coming soon.
